program note:
Figure in Movement is a part of works by the composer to achieve; creating musical variation with very short recorded natural sounds which are drastically time-wise altered and emphasized their microscopic movements. All the sound materials are recorded flute, performed by the flautist Sabine Vogel with her special techniques. These sounds are extremely time-stretched/compressed, as well as pitch-shifted, dense-varied, and spatialized etc, through granular sampling technique governed by probability and tendency masking algorithm. Moreover, such alteration is always kept continuity and interpolated to maintain each material as identifiable sound objects. Hence the characterized sound materials act like individual figures in motion rather than anonymous units to be composed. All the signal processing and control algorithms were programmed in Cycling ’74 Max. This piece was realized at Electronic Music Studio TU Berlin, in cooperation with Vogel, in 2005.
