program note:
Resonant Quarks is the first experimental work for the composer to achieve; creating musical variation with very short recorded natural sounds which are drastically time-wise altered and emphasized their microscopic movements. As the main material, four kinds of just one-second-long sound were chosen. These are extremely time stretched/compressed, as well as pitch-shifted, dense-varied, spatialized etc, through granular sampling technique governed by probability and tendency masking algorithm. Moreover, such alteration is always kept continuity to maintain each material as identifiable sound objects. Hence the four characterized sounds act like individual figures in motion rather than anonymous units to be composed. All the signal processing and control algorithms were programmed in Max/FTS running on NeXT computer and IRCAM Signal Processing Workstation. This piece was realized at the Sonology Department of Kunitachi College of Music, Tokyo in 1998.
